Maron marc9/22/2023 ![]() "I knew that it would be unmanageable and unruly and not in any way controlled or pretty." The sort of things that are afforded people in grief, even just sitting with other people or spending time with family or even a f**king funeral were not there. In terms of isolation being how most people handle grief because of shame or that people don't know what to do with it, I was actually isolated because it was COVID. Outside of magazines and trades and the show business community picking it up, I didn't need to make it as public as I did, but I did, because I'm a guy that shares his life. I certainly chose to make it more open than it was necessary. Is there anything good about having loss in such an open way? You went through grief in a really public way. We all go through it, but we often go through it privately. This grief that is the central part of this show is such a universal experience. "From Dark to Joy" would be good, but that seems like a big jump. I would think "From Dark to OK." I'm really OK, which is implicit in the presentation because I'm a comedian and I obviously have a handle on this stuff. What is the next gradient shade on that spectrum? Have no specific notes, but is there any way we can get it from bleak to dark?" And I thought, "Yeah, that's what I do." That's my whole life. says, "Look guys, it's great, great story, loved it, really great writing. Nick Grad, the head of FX, is at the top of this Zoom pyramid, and there's FX people and my people and me and Sam. So we outlined a story through the second script and we turned it in to FX and we had a notes call. We sold this show and we'd written one script for them, and they wanted another script. I was developing a show for FX with Sam Lipsyte, the novelist, and my good friend. I'll tell you because it's a funny story. I can't think of a special recently that has truly lived up to its name the way "From Bleak to Dark" does. This conversation has been lightly edited for clarity. Now, in a candid conversation for "Salon Talks," Maron discusses the "institutional insecurity" that has clouded this year's Oscars, as well as what he's learned from bombing on stage, and why the things he says in his new special "could be dangerous to my life." In the past few weeks, Maron has also been vocal about the controversy surrounding his "To Leslie" costar Andrea Riseborough's Oscar nomination - and the Academy's subsequent "review" of the grassroots campaign for that nod. It's the most exhilarating exploration of grief you'll likely see this year. ![]() But it's his blunt retelling of the aftermath of the sudden 2020 death of his partner, filmmaker Lynn Shelton, that forms the hilarious, cathartic heart of the performance. In the aptly named "From Bleak to Dark," the comedian and former "GLOW" actor takes on despair, dementia and depression with the trademark wry weariness familiar to fans of his long-running "WTF" podcast. "I don't want to be negative," says Marc Maron in his first-ever HBO special, "but I don't think anything's ever going to get better ever again."

Safari browser for windows 119/22/2023 ![]() That might make sense to web developers, who are deeply passionate about building web apps, but it doesn't make much sense outside that context. In other words, if Apple implements these things, developers will start building better web apps, no one will buy native apps, and Apple will lose its 30 per cent cut of the iOS App Store. ![]() This has long been the core of the argument that Apple is deliberately crippling WebKit to protect its App Store business. In essence Apple hasn't implemented some of the core features that make websites able to behave in an app-like way. Apple hasn't added support for sending notifications and home screen icons. Probably the two best-known examples of PWAs are Twitter and Uber.Īpple has implemented much of what developers need to build PWAs, but there are limitations. Some of the APIs used to build PWAs include the ability to run full screen (no browser UI), send notifications and alerts, offline capabilities, and launch from an icon on your home screen. Progressive web apps is an umbrella term of websites that want to behave like native mobile applications. Take the case of progressive web apps (PWAs). One theme that emerges when you dig into the Web Platform Tests data on Safari's shortcomings is that even where WebKit has implemented a feature, it's often not complete. According to the Web Platform Tests dashboard, Chrome-based browsers support 94 per cent of the test suite, and Firefox pulls off 91 per cent, but Safari only manages 71 per cent. But Safari – or more specifically the WebKit engine that powers it – is well behind the competition. ![]() Whether it's far enough behind to be considered "the new IE" is debatable and may say more about the shadow IE still casts across the web than it does about Safari. Today developers who want to use "cutting-edge" web APIs find themselves resorting to the same kind of browser-specific workarounds, but this time the browser dragging things down comes from Apple.Īpple's Safari lags considerably behind its peers in supporting web features. Microsoft's browser of yore made their lives miserable and it's only slightly hyperbolic to say it very nearly destroyed the entire internet. Feature The legacy of Internet Explorer 6 haunts web developer nightmares to this day.

The project will also position Natron’s Prussian blue electrode sodium-ion batteries for emerging applications, such as electric vehicle fast charging and dispatchable storage for grid power. To build the supply chain, Natron and its partners will adapt industry-standard chemicals synthesis and battery manufacturing equipment and processes to produce Natron’s cells and battery systems for data center applications. Natron’s tray provides data center operators up to 2x higher power density and 10x longer cycle life than existing products, along with superior safety performance. The primary product is an 8 kilowatt, 50 volt battery tray for use in data centers to manage peak compute load and provide critical backup power. The project aims to scale up production of Natron Energy’s (Natron) Prussian blue electrode sodium-ion batteries by 30x to 18,000 trays per year, and fully de-risk the resulting supply chain and products through continuous production and sales for six months. Teams not selected for the “Fast-Track” option are still eligible and under consideration for funding under the full SCALEUP program, for which selections are anticipated in January 2021.īrief descriptions of these SCALEUP “Fast-Track” selections are below, and for more information on the program click HERE.ĭomestic Manufacturing of Sodium-Ion Batteries - $19,883,951 SCALEUP “Fast-Track” teams applied under the initial solicitation at their choice but were given the opportunity to justify the urgency of their funding need in order to receive funding at an accelerated pace relative to the full program timeline.ĪRPA-E developed the “Fast-Track” in response to disruptions in the investor and R&D financing communities caused by COVID-19, as well as related capital concerns on the part of a number of SCALEUP applicants. The program works to take promising energy technologies to the pre-pilot stage of the path to market and ultimately lead to realized commercial impact. SCALEUP is a first-of-its-kind initiative that builds on ARPA-E’s primary research and development (R&D) focus, supporting the scaling of high-risk and potentially disruptive new technologies across the full spectrum of energy applications. “These two selections directly address this need and provide a mix of government and private resources to bring previously-funded ARPA-E technologies out of the lab and into the market.” “Many ARPA-E funded projects show immense technical promise, but at the end of their funding cycle are met with the difficult challenge of overcoming the dreaded ‘valley of death’ in securing further funding,” said ARPA-E Director Lane Genatowski. These SCALEUP “Fast-Track” teams, Natron Energy and Bridger Photonics, will receive $19 million and $5 million, respectively, to further their commercialization efforts in sodium-ion battery development and methane detection technologies. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced $24 million in funding for 2 projects as part of the first stage of the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy’s (ARPA-E) Seeding Critical Advances for Leading Energy technologies with Untapped Potential (SCALEUP) program.

Euthyroid sick syndrome treatment9/22/2023 ![]() ![]() But how can thyroid hormone treatment be justified by DeGroot for all patients with altered thyroid function tests of the ESS, which simply reflect acute homeostatic mechanisms when he acknowledges that hypothyroidism may take 2–3 weeks to actually develop? While the review cites studies showing reduced TRH biogenesis, this does not refute a concept of ESS as homeostatic in nature, nor does it imply that the patients are, by definition, hypothyroid. ( 10) carefully make the distinction between effects of acute vs. In patients such as those with prolonged coma, thyroid hormone therapy might be warranted, and in this context Van den Berghe et al. ![]() This could be true in some states of prolonged systemic illness that may lead to relative thyroid hormone deficiency as a result of chronically low degrees of TSH-driven thyroid hormone biosynthesis. DeGroot cites the increases in TSH that may be seen with recovery ( 9) as “strongly suggesting” that the patients are recovering from a hypothyroid state. ( 8) indicated that pituitary function was normal in critical illness in the absence of dopamine therapy. He postulates that ESS patients are hypothyroid on the basis of low TRH with secondarily low TSH, while ignoring the fact that observed changes in iodothyronines occur too rapidly in acute illness to be on a hypothalamic/pituitary basis. DeGroot calls the normal to low TSH levels in these situations “inappropriately low,” rather than considering them appropriate because the patients are euthyroid. Our concept of metabolic status in the ESS is that patients are indeed euthyroid during caloric deprivation, acute illness, surgery, and dozens of other models, and that the changes in thyroid function tests reflect effects by the various cytokines, circulating inhibitors, etc., as have been reviewed (1, 5–7). DeGroot would have us conclude that there is also low FT 4 in ESS, but his own literature review concludes that FT 4 may be low, normal, or elevated. Recently, Chopra ( 4) observed normal free T 3 in 83% of ESS patients and concluded it might be responsible for maintaining their euthyroid state. By definition, the ESS or “low T 3 syndrome” is characterized by low TT 3. ( 3), he overlooks their finding that only low T 3 significantly and independently predicted survival beyond what was clinically apparent to intensivist physicians. While he cites the study of Maldonado et al. Surely, a causal relationship cannot be inferred from the association of low serum T4 and risk of death, as severity of illness correlates directly with either low T 4 or risk of death. ( 2) by stating that “there is no factual basis for this dogma,” while failing to fully acknowledge that there is no factual basis for treatment either. DeGroot argues with the dogma against such treatment espoused by Chopra et al. DeGroot ( 1) cites a litany of circumstantial evidence ostensibly supporting a state of underlying hypothyroidism in patients with systemic illness, which in his view justifies treatment with thyroid hormone. Medication will give only symtomatic relief.įor more information, you can visit eMedicine. In his review of the euthyroid sick syndrome (ESS), Dr. No specicific treatment is there for euthyroid sick syndrome. What is the treatment for euthyroid sick syndrome? In severe NTI, the findings are low T4, low T3, reduced TSH, elevated rT3, and free T4 that is within the reference range or is diminished. Typical non thyroid illness (NTI) findings are T4 level within the reference range low T3 level, slightly reduced or reference range level of TSH, elevated rT3 level, and sometimes free T4 level is also raised. Include a number of chronic and acute conditions: What are the causes of euthyroid sick syndrome? The encountering between the P3 hero's SEES and the P3P heroine also proves to be traumatic for the latter, as none of them recognize her due to the fact that she came from an alternate reality despite appearing as identical people that she knows, resulting in her developing a strong sense of confusion and alienation and inversely the SEES members are also shocked and confused that she knows their names and has a real SEES armband and Evoker despite they never met her before. As a result, she enters the movie world alone without assistance from her teammates. Instead, she lands into Kamoshidaman from the Velvet Room via a dream during her study nap. Fireballs oddmar9/22/2023 Its cartoon-Norse universe is richly drawn and beautifully animated, while its classic 2D platforming is sharply executed. FAIRY TAIL Switch NSPĪside from its compact size and some overwritten (but nonetheless beautifully-rendered) story scenes, there really isn’t much to fault with Oddmar. All of these are flat-out better games than Oddmar, and we’d hazard a guess that at least a couple of them directly influenced its development. Shantae: Half-Genie Hero, Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition, and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze spring to mind off the top of our heads. Our main qualm in all this is that the Switch isn’t exactly short of bright, characterful 2D platformers. These palate cleansers cast you as a plaything for the Norse Gods, who chase and prod you through otherworldly obstacle courses. Occasionally, you’ll encounter optional bonus levels, accessed through a deep whiff of a suspiciously potent purple gas. There are several delightful variations on the classic moving/temporary platform theme. You’ll also get to ride fantastical creatures now and then Another level contains snaking vines that simultaneously provide a threat and a means of escape. One particular standout is a series of balloon rides through spike-filled airspace, requiring you to chop away ballast to adjust your altitude. Otherwise, most of the variation here comes from the level layouts, which contain some delightful touches. New weapons grant new bonus attacks, which is one of the ways the game keeps things interesting. ![]() There’s a currency to be collected, which can be spent on new weapons and shields at the merchant that crops up periodically.
